By then the visit is stressful for everyone. The first visit should happen long before that.

The recommended age

Within six months of the first tooth appearing, and no later than the first birthday. That surprises many parents — “but there are hardly any teeth!” — which is exactly the point. The first visit is not about treatment. It is about checking that the teeth are coming in normally, spotting early decay before it hurts, and teaching parents how to clean baby teeth and manage bottle-feeding and night feeds so that decay never starts.

Why baby teeth matter even though they fall out

Baby teeth hold the space for the permanent teeth and guide them into position. A baby molar lost early to decay can cause crowding that needs braces later. Decayed baby teeth also cause pain, infection, poor eating and disturbed sleep — and a child who associates the dentist with pain becomes an adult who avoids the dentist.

What happens at the first visit

For toddlers, a “knee-to-knee” exam — the child lies across the parent’s lap and ours, and we have a quick look.

We count the teeth, check the gums and bite, and look for early white spots that signal decay starting.

We show you how to brush your child’s teeth and how much toothpaste to use (a rice-grain smear under 3, a pea-sized amount after).

We talk about feeding, sippy cups, juice and snacks — the real causes of early childhood decay.

Preparing your child

Keep it light. Say “the dentist is going to count your teeth” — not “it won’t hurt”, which plants the idea that it might. Schedule a morning slot when the child is rested. Do not use the dentist as a threat at home. And if you are anxious about dentists yourself, try not to show it — children read parents very accurately.

After the first visit

Check-ups every six months, fluoride application as advised, and sealants on the permanent molars when they erupt around age six. Done consistently, most children go through childhood without a single filling.

Earlier than most parents in Dombivli expect — and here is why, what happens at that first visit, and how to make sure your child looks forward to the next one.

[7
14,16,20
post-106","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pediatric-dentistry","tag-first-visit","tag-kids-dentistry","tag-parents
["GET
