Abscess
An abscess is a collection of pus that is formed within the body due to a bacterial or any microbial infection. Areas around the abscess become red, swollen and warm. When pressed they feel like a fluid. Abscesses are always serious because the infection may spread to other parts of the body. It may be a gum abscess or a tooth related abscess. For the treatment, the exact cause and nature of the abscess or cyst is mandatory.
Xerostomia(Dry Mouth)
Xerostomia, more commonly known as dry mouth, is not a disease in itself. These conditions cause saliva production to decrease or stop. Some common causes include:
- A side effect of medicine - Hundreds of drugs can cause dry mouth. These include pain relievers and medicines for depression, cold symptoms, muscle spasms and allergies.
- Medicines are the most common cause of xerostomia. Older people often take many medicines, including those most likely to cause dry mouth. Medicines for diabetes, parkinsons disease and sjogrens syndrome are common causes for this condition.
- A complication of diseases and infections - Dry mouth occurs more often among people with certain diseases. They include diabetes, anemia, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure and HIV infection. Xerostomia also occurs with Sjögren’s syndrome. In this disease, the body’s antibodies attack the salivary and tear glands. Some viral infections, such as mumps, also affect saliva production and cause xerostomia.
- Dehydration - Any condition that leads to loss of body fluids can also cause xerostomia. These conditions include fever, excessive sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, blood loss or loss of water through the skin after a burn.
- Radiation therapy - Xerostomia is a common side effect of radiation therapy to treat cancers in the head and neck.
- Surgical removal of the salivary glands - If a mass develops in a salivary gland, surgical removal of the gland may be recommended.
Cold Sores
Cold sores, sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. Cold sores and fever blisters are caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Stress also can lead to a cold sore outbreak. This includes mental and emotional stress, as well as dental treatment, illness, trauma to the lips or sun exposure.
Trismus(Restricted Mouth Opening)
Trismus, or lockjaw, refers to reduced opening of the jaws caused by spasm of the muscles of mastication, or may generally refer to all causes of limited mouth opening. Trismus can be caused by:
- Trauma (injury) to the face and/or jaw
- Problems with the jaw joint (also known as the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ) — This is one of the most common causes of trismus.
- Surgery
- A tumor in the jaw area (of soft tissue or bone)
- Local muscle soreness from clenching or grinding the teeth (bruxism)
- A local anesthetic shot, if the needle nicks the muscle tissue or a blood vessel and causes some internal bleeding
- Radiation therapy to the head and neck — Of people who receive such radiation, 10% to 40% will develop trismus.
- Infection
- Diseases that affect the whole body, particularly central nervous system disorders or autoimmune diseases such as lupus
- Tetanus (lockjaw)
- Trismus often develops slowly. For example, it can occur in someone who is receiving radiation. For this reason, it may go unnoticed for some time. Trismus also can develop suddenly.
- An example would be someone who is in a car accident and has trauma to the jaw.
- In certain cases, if trismus is left untreated, problems with swallowing, speech and oral hygiene can develop.
